Gary Soneji (Michael Wincott) wants to commit the "crime of the century".
He takes a job as a teacher in an exclusive private school that caters
to children of Senators and foreign diplomats. When he kidnaps Megan Rose
(Mika Boorem), he invites Alex Cross (Morgan Freeman) to work the case
by sending him critical evidence. Secret Service Agent Jezzie Flannigan
(Monica Potter) is taking the heat for letting this incident occur, but
Alex says he needs Jezzie on his team to solve the crime. There are a couple
of "surprise" twists, as Alex discovers that Megan was not the
only target that Soneji has in mind and he is not the only criminal mind
at work here.
The alternate title for this movie could be Along Came Bad Acting. Everybody seems flat and the script is awful.
The movie starts off with the cheesiest special effect we have seen in
a long time - it looks like they used a matchbox car and it cost $7 to
produce this "car crashes then falls over a dam" scene. The movie
never recovers from this dubious start.
On a stake out Jezzie observes that Alex has done this before and he says
"Yeah, I’ve done this a lot of times." - and unfortunately we
keep having to watch him - Morgan Freeman needs to find a new genre - we
would like to see him doing something different.
It's very predictable, including the "surprise twists". What
would have been a terrific ending would have been for Alex Cross to put
two in the little girl and take off with the diamonds - that would have
made the whole movie worthwhile. As it is, the result is big time Codswallop.
