102 DALMATIANS

RATING 2

(Director: Kevin Lima, G, 100 min)

Cruella De Vil (Glenn Close) is released from prison after undergoing extensive behavioral modification from Dr. Pavlov. She is reformed (at least temporarily) and gets a job working for the 2nd Chance dog shelter. However, once a villain always a villain and soon she is back to scheming with Jean Pierre Le Pelt (Gerard Depardieu) to create her infamous spotted dog coat. Her plans include stealing 99 puppies plus the 3 special puppies that belong to her probation office, Cloe (Alice Evans).

This is one of those Disney sequels that should have been released straight to video. I wanted to like this movie, because I really enjoyed the cartoon and the live version of 101 Dalmatians, but I just couldn't get past the fact that this sequel wasn't all that funny, wasn't cute, and wasn't entertaining. OK, maybe that's a little harsh, but I was very disappointed in Disney for not living up to their usual standards.

102 Dalmatians should have been called Cruella, because it wasn't really about the puppies - it was Glenn Close's movie from beginning to end. They didn't even show the puppies until 30 minutes into the movie.

Gerard Depardieu (who is one of our favorite French actors) is so over-the-top in this movie as Le Pelt, he can be hard to take.

I wish the whole movie had been as good as the end, when the spotless puppy, Oddball, is making the daring rescue. This is the only part that has the good-time feeling of the original movies.

There were a couple of kids who clapped when Cruella was baked in a cake (maybe they were clapping because they knew it meant the movie was almost over).

If you have kids that are begging to see this movie, rent 101 Dalmatians again, and make them wait for this one to come out on cable.

Movie Chick Cherryl:
"There were just too many bad parts and not enough good parts for me to want to see this dog again. I would rather do laundry or give my sister's dog a bath, than to have to suffer with Cruella one more time - 1."

Movie Chick Leigh Ann:
"Movie Chick Cherryl's bark is worse than her bite. I thought Gerard Depardieu was very funny (outrageous costume and all). I'll let her give my dog a bath, while I'm watching it again - 3."
