John Grady Cole (Matt Damon) loses his family ranch when his grandfather
passes away. All he wants to do is work the land, so he and his best friend,
Lacey Rawlins (Henry Thomas), decide to take off for Mexico where there
are still huge ranches. They meet a young man, Jimmy Blevins (Lucas Black),
who causes trouble wherever he goes. Blevins loses his horse and then is
caught trying to take it back and is accused of horse-thieving. Cole and
Rawlins find a ranch that is run by Ruben Blades. Cole falls for the boss'
daughter (Penelope Cruz) and their love is doomed from the start.
This movie was a little slow in parts, which is a trademark for Billy Bob
Thorton (the director). He sets his movies at his own pace and doesn't
rush through a story. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it drags a little
too much and ends up hurting the movie.
There was quite a bit of humor at the beginning of the movie, but once
bad things start to happen, all the humor vanishes and it's just one tragedy
after another.
This movie works much better as a buddy film than it does as a tragic love
story.
Henry Thomas is just beautiful as Rawlins. He has grown up into a fine young actor, it's hard to believe his played Elliot from E.T. And Matt Damon is always easy on the eyes, even when he has a cowboy tan.
