Gwen Cummings (Sandra Bullock) has a drinking problem, but doesn't see
it until she ruins her sister's wedding and is court-ordered to rehab.
Even on the inside, her boyfriend, Jasper (Dominic West) sneaks her alcohol
and pills and doesn't want her to change, because he doesn't want to change.
Gwen tries to escape several times. When her caseworker (Steve Buscemi)
tells her to straighten up or go to jail, she realizes that she probably
could benefit from some therapy. She has the support of her "group"
with Viggo Mortensen, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Azura Skye, and Mike O'Malley.
Betty Thomas directs this movie with just enough humor to keep from overwhelming
the audience, but enough real emotions to show a slice of life inside a
treatment facility. It helps that both she and Sandra Bullock spent some
actual time in a rehab researching this project and knew how to make it
"real".
Sandra does an outstanding job both in and out of treatment. She gets a
chance to show some range here and uses it to her advantage. There are
a poignant moments where she gets to shine and we cared about all of these
wounded people.
Mrs. Robinson awards to Viggo Mortensen (in rehab) and Dominic West (out of rehab). Decisions,
decisions… These guys give a whole new meaning to the phrase "in or
out - make up your mind".
