ADAM & STEVE

RATING 3.5

(Director: Craig Chester, PG/R, 99 min)

Adam (Craig Chester) and Steve (Malcolm Gets) actually meet for the first time in 1987 and fall instantly in lust, but their one-night stand turns sour before it ever gets started and it’s a humiliating disaster they both try their best to forget.

Fast forward 17 years, Adam and Steve meet again – this time it’s a pet emergency that brings them together. They start dating and don’t realize that share a jaded past. They each have a straight best friend to confide in – Steve’s roommate Michael (Chris Kattan) and Adam’s gal-pal, the formerly obese stand-up comic Rhonda (Parker Posey), who continues to tell only “fat jokes” because she’s more comfortable with that genre. The relationship goes great in spite of meeting Steve’s parents from Texas and Adam’s family who suffers from a tragic curse (their dinner definitely qualifies for the divine absurd). But can their love overcome the truth about their past?

This movie is really hit and miss on the jokes – many bombing as badly as Rhonda’s stand-up gig (which is really awful), but there are more moments when it’s hilarious, cute, and romantic. Plus, they get a chance to play a couple of gay cowboys (even if it’s only to do a little two-stepping and line dancing in boots). The music is almost like another character – from the 80’s disco numbers to the country song written especially for them to the song that Steve sings at the perfect moment.

The boys fantasize about having “Julia” and “Meg” relationships, and their wishes comes true – they get a romantic comedy that would definitely be in the chick-flick category if only one of them was a chick. The audience just fantasizes about Malcolm taking off his shirt again and showing off that physique.

Movie Chick Cherryl:
"The fact that it’s a ‘gay movie’ doesn’t change the fact that it’s cute, fun, and entertaining – 3.5"
