William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) was 18th century England’s epitome
of political activism, in Parliament he was know for being a tireless champion
for causes he was passionate about; most notably the abolition of slavery
in England. Wilberforce is a young man torn between devoting his life to
God or remaining in politics, he seeks council from John Newton (Albert
Finney), a reformed slave trader now an Anglican clergy and the author
of the inspirational hymn “Amazing Grace”. His good friend William Pitt
(Benedict Cumberbatch) has aspirations to become Prime Minister and wants
his friend to stay in politics and work together for change. Wilberforce
meets Thomas Clarkson (Rufus Sewell) and his persuasive friends who want
Wilberforce to lead the campaign against the slave trade. The common argument
is that he can serve God and reform the government at the same time – pretty
compelling.
The strain of his career does damage to his already weak health – as he
is recuperating in the country he is introduced to Barbara (Romola Garai);
their first encounter is a bit bristly but they quickly find that their
common views and beliefs make a solid foundation for a future together.
Wilberforce returns to London newly inspired and his organized group of
abolitionists seeks other influential MP’s to join them and surprisingly
Lord Charles Fox (Michael Gambon) agrees to work with them.
This is one of those well-crafted films where you are inspired and moved (in other words – bring Kleenex!) and possibly even tempted to sing along when the familiar strains begin. All of the elements work harmoniously together - beautiful settings, an extremely talented cast who bring the characters to life, gorgeous costuming and a rich script that informs and delights.
This is the first “must see” film of the year, so run don’t walk to your local art house theatre and allow yourself to be delighted by this remarkable story.
