40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS

RATING 4

(Director: Michael Lehmann, R, 94 min)

Matt (Josh Hartnett) is crushed by the breakup of his relationship with Nicole (Vinessa Shaw). Now his evil ex is haunting his sleep and waking moments, visions of her are even interfering with his current casual flings. Something's got to be done! Matt seeks advice from his brother John (Adam Trese) and becomes inspired to give up sex and all things sexual for Lent. That's right - 40 days - No Hanky, No Panky, No Wanking!

Matt's attempt at purification through abstinence starts out very successful - by eliminating sex he has more time to do all those special things like, building model cars, designing more web sites for work, and our favorite - laundry! Ryan (Paulo Costanzo) his roommate thinks this is a stupid ideal and is very doubtful of Matt's ability to actually keep his vow of chastity. Matt might be able to do it (or without it as the case may be) but he has lots of obstacles thrown in his path, like meeting the girl of his dreams - Erica (Shannyn Sossamon).

His vow becomes the focus of a large betting pool at work; of course everyone wants him to fail on their money day so many attempts at office seduction take place. He is struggling to remain uncorrupted but doesn't want to lose Erica. Can he find a way to be intimate without any physical contact?

This is a funny movie - most of the humor is actually clever (ok - they do succumb to some juvenile sight gags that could have been left out but…). For a sexless comedy this has lots of sexy bits, it doesn't hurt that they have a cast of beautiful people (not the bagel-guy) and situations that turn ordinary things into romantic possibilities. Who knew dryer sheets could mean so much to a girl?

Before you give it up for lent you should weigh the pros and cons of abstinence:

PROS:

  • 11,000 people are injured every year trying out new sexual positions - think of the medical bills you'll avoid
  • You can re-channel all of that energy and make papier-mâché ashtrays for your friends
  • In the great words of Monty Python "Every sperm is sacred."

CONS:

  • 40 Days is a long time - maybe you should start by giving up chocolate
  • Mornings can be rough on guys
  • Not everyone can have immaculate orgasms

Movie Chick Cherryl:
"This movie gives a whole new meaning to giving a girl flowers. I didn't care for Griffin Dunne's role, but I thought Josh did an excellent Meg Ryan impression (fake orgasm) - 4."

Movie Chick Leigh Ann:
"I was going to give up drooling over cute young boys for lent but then I went to see this movie - oops. Please forgive me - 4."
