ABOUT ADAM

RATING 4.5

(Director: Gerard Stembridge, R, 105 min)

A ditsy waitress, Lucy (Kate Hudson) has just broken off with the latest in a long string of boyfriends, when she meets Adam (Stuart Townsend), the shy, mysterious type so different from her usual men. She introduces Adam to her family and he immediately starts getting to know them - intimately. There’s Laura (Frances O’Connor) who is bookish and in need of a really good shag; Alice (Charlotte Bradley) who is not-so-happily married and craves attention and someone to notice her beauty; David (Alan Maher) who is jealous of Adam, attracted to him, and wants help with his girlfriend Karen (Cathleen Bradley) all at the same time; and mum (Rosaleen Linehan) who thinks Adam is the best thing that ever came along. Is Adam too good to be true? He seems to have the ability to transform himself into the man best suited to give each of these people exactly what they desire and make them all happy. Nothing, not even a little wedding, will stand in his way.

Adam has no morale qualms about seducing anyone, which might be a bit off putting except he tells his stories with such charm and sincerity that you can’t help but fall for him right along with the rest of the family. There’s just something about a man with a Jaguar!

This little Irish comedy is very funny, and well cast. Kate Hudson is totally clueless as Lucy, but she has a nice singing voice and pulls off a believable Irish accent. We like the older sister, Alice; she knows what Adam is doing and makes her decision to play along anyway. The transformation "Poor Laura" goes through from the neurotic, needy, bookworm to the lusty wild woman is jolly good fun.

Mrs. Robinson alert - Stuart Townsend is dreamy.
