If you're in the mood to celebrate the good things about America instead of focusing on the negative, this new documentary from Walt Disney Pictures is certain to fit the bill. It showcases the diversity of the people, the beauty of the land, and entertains along the way. The movie is made up mostly of unique stories about ordinary people.
People with interesting jobs and hobbies: a dairy farmer, New York City
bike messenger (with some footage following him in traffic that will have
you holding your breath), female aerobatic pilot, oil well firefighters,
steelworkers, horse wrangler, Olympic boxer, Indian elder, business entrepreneurs,
and a blind mountain climber. There are artists: junk art, car art, and
a guy that blows things up for his craft, jazz musicians from New Orleans,
Cajun singers, Gospel singers, a rock band, salsa dancers, and cliff dancers
(you just have to see this to understand how beautiful dancing on the side
of a cliff can be). Plus, there are a few people who are thrown in the
mix just to inspire us all.
Granted, it's a look at our country through rose-colored glasses, but oh, what you get to see. The incredible cinematography captures the rich colors and beauty of our country (and in case you forget this is a patriotic movie about America, they even have a bald eagle soaring over the majestic landscapes). Too much? Perhaps, but even when it gets schmaltzy, it still works.
There are poignant moments, and funny stuff (some of the musicians have stories that are especially amusing), silly stories, interesting philosophies about life, along with some great (and near-great) music. Everyone who sees this will have favorite vignettes and there will be sections that don't do a thing for you, but it all goes by pretty fast, so none of it has a chance to get stale. And if you're the kind of person that gets a little emotional when you see fireworks or hear the National Anthem, the ending is bound to make you teary-eyed and walk away with a smile.
