Matt (Kieran O'Brien) is a scientist on an expedition, studying the glacial ice in Antarctica. He has a lot of time on his hands with nothing to do but look at ice, so he starts reminiscing about Lisa (Margot Stilley), the American girl he met at a London underground concert.
Here's the deal - it's a guy remembering his relationship - and all he focuses on are the moments that involve sex, drugs, rock 'n roll, and a couple of really good meals (not that ALL guys are like this, but you can probably relate). A woman might have remembered the feelings they shared for one another and tender moments snuggling after sex, but to be fair, in this relationship there didn't seem to be a deep emotional connection, so she might have focused on the same things he did.
Is it art or porn in disguise? You used to be able to tell that it was art because there was more story, the sex wasn't 100% real, and there was no "money shot". The lines are getting blurred. Director Michael Winterbottom wanted to push the envelope and make the sex scenes as real as those that are described in graphic novels, so he got a couple willing to go for it. The problem is that the "realistic" sex is not an integral part of the story - it is the story. There wasn't a script, just a live concert followed by sex, a quick bite to eat followed by sex, a little bondage with sex, or a bit of masturbation followed by sex - with some narration over the frozen tundra in between. Not that there's anything wrong with sex, but a little story would be nice. And yes, there is a "money shot" - and yes, let's just say Kieran O'Brien has the right equipment for this movie.
This is pretty short for a feature film, with a running time that is appropriately
(for this particular movie) 69 minutes. There are moments that are extremely
sexy and times when it feels very voyeuristic to be watching because it's
more intimate than pornography. Unsuspecting people are going to be walking
out of this one (and it's not first-date material). If you're strictly
looking for titillation, you'll still think there's too much out-of-bed
time - so you're better off renting something else.
