ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS

RATING 3.5

(Director: Tim Hill, PG, 90 min)

Dave (Jason Lee) wants to be a songwriter, but he’s been singing about death ever since Claire (Cameron Richardson) left him – which doesn’t go over well with his buddy Ian (David Cross) at Jett Records. Dave goes home to sulk, but what he doesn’t know is that he picked up a little something at Ian’s office, and we’re not just talking about the basket of muffins he swiped. In the basket are three adorable, but hungry, chipmunks with the ability to talk, sing, and make a really big mess without adult supervision. After having free range in the kitchen, Dave is ready to throw them out into the rainy night, until he hears them sing "Funky Town" and he’s won over. He’s inspired to write a Christmas song for his new furry friends. Simon is the smart one, Theodore is the one who just wants a family, and Alvin is the mischievous one (although they all can cause trouble when given half a chance).

"Uncle" Ian hears the guys sing and wants to launch the next big singing sensation, but Dave is worried about them because they’re still just kids. Will Alvin, Simon, and Theodore live like rock stars with all the toys they ever dreamed of or will they get what they really want?

You might not believe that Alvin and the chipmunks could still work after being around for 50 years (with only one notable hit song), but they can. This update has a fresh take on the little chipmunks (even a rap version of "Christmas Don’t Be Late") and a story that has something sweet to say about the difference between showering gifts and showing love and concern (a nice family message for the holidays).

The trailer didn’t thrill, but hey, you can’t always tell the quality of a movie by the 2 minutes they cut together. It’s a pleasant surprise that this is cute and funny and not boring for the adults in the audience. And if you want to know what the kids thought, they broke out into spontaneous applause on several occasions. What more do you want for a holiday movie?

Movie Chick Cherryl:
"I went into this movie with expectations that couldn’t get much lower, but came out a fan of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore... and Dave, for making us care about them as much as he does – 3.5"
