BELLA

RATING 3

(Director: Alejandro Monteverde, PG-13, 100 min)

Jose (Eduardo Verástegui) was all set to be a professional soccer star until an accident changes everything for him. Now he works as the head chef in his brother Manny’s (Manny Perez) New York restaurant. Nina (Tammy Blanchard) also works there as a waitress until she’s late for the third time and Manny fires her. Jose, being the nice guy that he is, follows her, only to find out her problem is that she’s pregnant and alone.

On the spur of the moment, Jose decides to stay with her and be a friend for her when she really needs one. They spend the day together – finding a new job for Nina and going out to Jose’s family home, where Nina gets a chance to see what being around a big family feels like. She lost her father at an early age, so she’s never experienced the kind of warmth that comes from being surrounded by love. Is it enough for her to change her mind about keeping the baby?

You think you know where this is going because it sets you up for one thing and then sends you off in another direction. What’s nice about this is that it doesn’t settle for a "Hollywood" ending (or even a Hollywood middle) – it’s more like life, where you get surprises and disappointments and things don’t always work out the way you plan. Sometimes they’re better; sometimes they’re worse; and sometimes they’re just different.

Our two disappointments were wanting the romance that’s implied in the trailer and hinted at along the way and having Eduardo hide that beautiful face of his behind that mess of a beard.

There are moments of magic and moments of utter sadness and the actors do fine jobs of making them all feel real. There are plenty of time jumps and on at least one occasion it takes a few moments to catch up with the action, but you get there. There’s a strong message here about the fact that one instant in time can change your life forever and so can one person, so be open to the possibilities.

Movie Chick Cherryl:
"It’s more of a life story than a love story. It’s also a story that would play just as well if you waited to see this on the small screen – 3."
