THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM

RATING 4

(Director: Paul Greengrass, PG-13, 111 min)

We've seen two movies now where Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) proves he’s a bad ass super spy who can’t remember who trained him to be such a ruthless and effective killing machine or why. Now Jason is having flashbacks, which can only mean one thing – when he gets back his memory, somebody is going to be sorry.

A new person in power, Ezra Kramer (Scott Glenn), thinks Bourne could expose the fact that Project Treadstone is part of a bigger, darker, secret plan called Blackbriar. Naturally, somebody has to stop that – so CIA Agent Noah Vosen (David Strathairn) takes over the job of hunting Bourne down and eliminating him. With a press of a button, new "assets" are sent out to do away with Bourne and anyone near him. Agent Pamela Landy (Joan Allen) gets involved because she doesn’t believe that Bourne is a rogue agent – she wants to help bring him home and get him some counseling. Bourne’s other ally is Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) – she gets caught up in this mess again, but it’s clear that she and Jason have some history that he doesn’t recall and she’s eager to believe he’s on the good side.

With new assassins on Bourne’s trail, you know what that means – non-stop, adrenaline-pumped super spy action with lots of hand-to-hand combat (where anything and everything can become a weapon), heart-pounding chase sequences all over the world, lots of stuff getting blown up, and one daring escape after another. Bourne just keeps going, proving over and over he can take a beating, a car-accident, a gunshot – nothing can stop him (it may cause a limp or a pained expression, but his ailments never linger). Bourne is a no-nonsense, calculating, thinking man’s action hero and Matt Damon was born to play this part.

The series stopped moving the characters forward as people since they killed off Marie, but the relationships between Bourne and his fellow agents Pamela and Nicky keep it interesting. The one thing you notice is that everybody is 100% serious about this top-secret business – there are no wisecracking one-liners (in fact, the ultimatum could be - if anyone smiles in this movie before the last shot, they’re out of the picture). It’s safe to say that almost nothing gets in the way of the action, but it’s cool action (and better than the second movie), so we don’t mind.
